Sweet Pepperbush
Bloomed sweet pepperbush flower
Mature pepperbush flowers
Although the sweet pepperbush is invasive in many areas, it is native to the pine barrens. The leaves are oval shaped with jagged edges. When the flower blooms, it appears white with orange or red hairs. When it matures, the flower shrivels, and may remain a light color or turn into a dark purple. The way they change color and grow closely to one and other gives it a color resemblance to peppercorns.
