The American holly is a berry-producing bush with sharp, pointed leaves. Its leaves remain throughout winter, unlike many other neighboring plants that lose their foliage during winter dormancy. The tree prefers wetland environments but will be found in uplands. It grows in acidic soil, which is the most common soil in the Pine Barrens.
