Oak
Although there are many common species of oak throughout the pine barrens, much of it is scrub oak. Low nutrient, acidic soil (especially found in the upland forests) only allows certain oak species to grow to a dwarf size. This species is unique since it can still thrive in poor soil - unlike other species of oak. Other species of oak, aside from scrub are often found within wetlands, or much closer to swamplands where the soil is more nutrient-rich.
