Sphagnum moss is a hardy surface level covering that thrives in shady and moist environments. This moss is what covers the majority of the grounds in the Atlantic white cedar forests. It grows through dead and fallen foliage on the ground. Like in the picture, sphagnum moss appears throughout all four seasons including winter. During winter, the moss will shrivel up until warmer months approach.
