Mountain Laurels Bloom

Mountain laurels finally bloom

Mountain laurel flowers open up and it happens around late may to early june. They come in both pink and white. The flowers die off quickly by July.

Mountain laurels have velvety leaves and the plant itself can sometimes reach 15 feet tall.

Low nutrient soil pitch pine forest

An area of Penn State forest grows Pitch pine at a lower density, and contains much more space in between each tree. The trees may be newer growth, or they are growing in low-nutrient soil. With more space for sunlight to reach the bottom, many grasses and inkberry bushes cover the ground.
